One of the best places to get great sales training is at the RVDA Conference each year. However, early reports coming in from Las Vegas indicate that attendance was down significantly and that many excelent speakers had very small audiences. There is no reason in the world that manufacturers should not also be sending their reps to these training sessions. I think you will agree with me after you read what dealers have to say about the reps calling on them.
Everybody understands the challenges we face in the RV industry today, but with the cutbacks we have seen at so many manufacturers, how is it that we still have so many bad manufacturer's reps in the field? This blog is not intended for all the good ones, the professional ones that do their job right - it's about the duds and we wonder out loud how they can still be on somebody's payroll.
Here's what one dealer had to say, "In tough times our reps should be visiting us on an increased basis, but as you know, just the opposite has occurred."
A veteran manufacturer's rep lamented, "Maybe it will open some eyes."
A dealer that started his RV career as a manufacturer's rep says, "I've always been appalled by the lack of professionalism, education, and direction the average rep has. More than ever it is apparent to me that they have no clue about what is going on. It's a real problem in our industry."
The most frustrating note came from a dealer I know quite well, and I know he runs a great dealership and really treats his prospects and customers very well. If I didn't know this dealer I might question the comment. He sadly wrote, "We recently were told by a rep that he wasn't doing any more product training because ALL THE INFORMATION WE NEEDED WAS ON THE INTERNET."
And this guy is still working in the RV industry today? Why?
Did we learn nothing from the good years? These are challenging times, and we have no desire to kick people when they are down, but these comments came from people in the industry, not this reporter. This is what they are seeing today from the people visiting them or talking to them from the factory. This truly is appalling.
Let's open this discussion up and see what the rest of you have to say on this volatile topic. Are there other dealers out there that have something to say? What about the manufacturers - the dealers are talking about some of you here and it's not pretty.
Have at it.
Wow, it's great to be back on the keyboard!
