FAIRFAX, Va. -- The RV Dealers Association received word today that G. Bellinger Davis, Jr., the founder of Holiday on Wheels in Columbia, S.C., passed away Feb. 28.
Davis established Holiday on Wheels in 1964 as a part-time venture to supplement his income as an elementary school principal. It ultimately became a full-time RV business.
His son, Gary Davis, who now operates the dealership said, "I once asked my dad, 'How do I solve a problem with a customer?' His reply was 'put yourself into the customer's shoes, and your response will always be correct.'"
Born in Columbia, Davis was the son of the late George Bellinger and Louise McAlhany Davis. A graduate of Dreher High School and USC, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1958 and again from 1961-1963 attaining the rank of Captain.
Davis was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, served as president of the Kiwanis Club in the mid-1970s, and as president of Rotary Club Columbia East from 1996-1997. His benevolence to the community was very strong.
Surviving are his wife, Norma Catherine Marsha Davis; daughter, Debra Davis Crews (Charles); sons, Gary Anthony Davis (Kelly) and George Bellinger "Bud" Davis III (Pam); seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rotary Foundation, c/o Dr. Anne Matthews, 31 Braddock Drive, Columbia, SC 29209.
