While his sales haven’t surged yet, he’s seen more traffic on his lot than in previous months. (Feb. 10, 2009) -- An e-mail arrives from someone claiming to represent a prospective buyer. Often using the name of Nathan Seer or Rich Edmund, the agent offers a flat cash payment without haggling. He wants to use a bank draft from an earlier deal that never went through. But it is for a bigger amount than the RV's selling price, so he asks the seller to issue a check for the difference. It usually takes a few days for the financial institution to bounce the fake bank draft. By then the RV is long gone and so is the con artist, who has cashed the victim's check. Some people have lost as much as $10,000 on top of the value of their vanished RV.

(Feb. 4, 2009) -- “Chemical toilet products sold and used in California to control holding tank odors and waste decomposition in recreational vehicles (RV), boats, campgrounds and RV parks, etc. are banned if they contain a non-biodegradable toxic chemical. While there are many banned non-biodegradable toxic chemicals, formaldehyde (commonly used to reduce odor in chemical toilet waste) has come to the attention of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and based on data that was reviewed, meets the criteria as a non-biodegradable toxic chemical substance. Any chemical toilet product containing formaldehyde in any concentration should not be sold or used in California.”

Convention Center staff issued an e-mail earlier this week confirming that they had to cancel the rally because they had not received the deposits due on the event, despite the fact 275 people had paid $195 to register for the rally. Another 50 people were on the waiting list, according to one person familiar with the situation.

In addition, sometimes the amounts of the bank drafts are higher than the negotiated price, with the "buyer" asking for a cash refund of the difference.

(Jan. 8, 2008) -- In the latest sign that consumers are under financial stress, indirect auto loan and home equity lines of credit (HELOC) delinquencies reached their highest levels ever during the third quarter of 2008, according to the American Bankers Association's Consumer Credit Delinquency Bulletin. Ironically, RV loans posted the lowest level of delinquencies, rising from 1.07 to 1.27 percent.

(Dec. 22, 2008) -- American Guardian said the Schenmeyers were overcharged not just for the labor, but for the refurbished Aqua Hot as well. John Wendt, the claims director for the company, said Bob Schenmeyer was at fault because he hadn't properly winterized and maintained the Aqua Hot. But, with little further comment from American Guardian, the company mailed the Schenmeyers a check for an additional $3,400. That means the couple has now received $5,800, instead of the $7,500 they were expecting. That's good enough for them.

(Dec. 15, 2008) -- An Australian family stranded after their RV was stolen in early-September is on their way again. The family of three was allowed to live in a Carriage fifth wheel free of charge at the company's onsite campground after their own RV was stolen from a Forest River facility. The insurance settlement was processed last week, the family purchased a new RV and has left the area expressing thanks to the Carriage staff for their hospitality.
